Lincoln Holden is een luchtmachtofficier die als krijgsgevangene werd gefolterd in Korea. Hij wil weer actief zijn als testpiloot en het respect van zijn mannen behouden. Zijn overste wil hem uit veiligheidsoverwegingen evenwel niet meer laten vliegen.
