Thirty-Three è un singolo del gruppo alternative rock statunitense The Smashing Pumpkins, il quinto ed ultimo estratto dal loro terzo album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. È stato anche il primo singolo pubblicato dopo la morte di Jonathan Melvoin ed il temporaneo allontanamento di Jimmy Chamberlin.

Il 24 agosto del 2000, durante una puntata di VH1 Storytellers, Billy Corgan raccontò il significato dietro la canzone.[2]

«....Era il 1994, e mi ero appena trasferito in una nuova casa, che alla fine sarebbe diventata una casa vittoriana viola a Chicago. E questa è stata la prima canzone che ho scritto per l'album. E questa canzone incapsula davvero lo spirito di quel tempo. Mi ero appena sposato, mi ero appena trasferito in una nuova casa, la band stava raggiungendo il tipo di successo che le persone sognano e basta, ed ero davvero fiducioso riguardo all'idea che alla fine e un giorno - e sembrava che sarebbe successo - avrei davvero avuto una vita felice. Non andò propriamente così. Ma non penso che sia ciò che voglio veramente sottolineare riguardo a questo specifico brano. «...The year was 1994 and I just moved into a new house that was eventually going to be a purple Victorian house in Chicago. And this is the first song that I wrote for that album. And this song really embodies the spirit of that time. I had just gotten married, I’d just moved into a new house, the band was achieving the kind of success that people only dream of and I was really hopeful with the idea that I was eventually and someday –and it looked like it was going to happen– actually have a happy life. It didn’t quite work out that way. But I don’t think that’s what I really want to emphasize about this particular song. You know, hope is really the key component in life because one must have hope and faith to actually get out of bed and do anything in this world. And you know, in my mind at that time, I think I was 27 years old, I thought that I had arrived. I supposedly had everything one would want: the wife, the cat, the house, the car, and the money and –oh yeah, the fame. But I think what I’m really trying to say here is all I ever really wanted was a happy home...»

È stato il primo brano scritto da Billy Corgan dopo il Siamese Dream tour.

Lo stesso Corgan il 24 agosto 2000 ha scherzato in una puntata di VH1 Storytellers asserendo che aveva in mente di fare "Thirty-Three", "Sixty-Six", e "Ninety-Nine", ma di aver finito solo "Thirty-Three".[3] Quando la band ha pubblicato il suo Greatest Hits nel 2001, Thirty-Three non è stata inserita né nella versione internazionale, né in quella americana venendo tuttavia inclusa nel Greatest Hits Video Collection.

Il singolo ha raggiunto il 2º posto nella Billboard Alternative Songs negli Stati Uniti.[4]

Video

Il video musicale di Thirty-Three, diretto da Billy Corgan e dalla sua fidanzata dell'epoca Yelena Yemchuk, è filmato con una serie di immagini scattate in stop-motion, che termina con una rievocazione della copertina dell'album Mellon Collie. Jimmy Chamberlin è già assente dalle immagini riguardanti la band. Il video del brano, a differenza della maggior parte dei video dei Pumpkins, è stato realizzato con immagini strettamente legate alle parole del testo.[5]

I fan hanno lanciato un grande attacco allo spettacolo Total Request Live di MTV per avere la canzone riprodotta il giorno del trentatreesimo compleanno di Billy Corgan nel 2000. Il progetto non è stato un successo, non riuscendo a raggiungere le richieste per un numero sufficiente, ma è stato menzionato in onda dal presentatore Carson Daly.
