Putih Salju

Putih Salju, (Inggris: Snow White, dalam Jerman, Schneewittchen, Turun salju pada edisi pertama^[1]) adalah karakter fiksi dalam cerita dongeng yang berasal dari beberapa tempat di Eropa, versi yang paling terkenal adalah cerita oleh Grimm Bersaudara. Pada versi Jerman, terdapat elemen seperti cermin dan tujuh kurcaci.

Pada klasifikasi cerita rakyat Aarne-Thompson, Putih Salju masuk ke dalam grup 709. Cerita lain yang masuk ke dalam grup ini adalah Bella Venezia, Myrsina, Nourie Hadig, The Young Slave dan Gold-Tree and Silver-Tree.^[2]

Putih Salju atau Putri Salju?

Kebanyakan orang Indonesia (termasuk para penerjemah & editor) selalu salah kaprah menerjemahkan "Putih Salju" (Snow White) menjadi "Putri Salju" (Snow Princess), kesalahan penamaan yang akhirnya menjadi lebih umum, akan tetapi terjemahan yang benar adalah "Putih Salju". Princess Snow White (Putri Putih Salju) adalah tokoh dongeng dari Eropa sedangkan Snow Princess (Putri Salju) adalah terjemahan untuk 雪姫 (ゆきひめ Yuki-Hime), sebutan untuk siluman wanita salju dari Jepang.^[3] Keduanya adalah tokoh yang berbeda dan tidak saling berhubungan.
