Dalam taksonomi, Picrophilus adalah genus arkea dari famili Picrophilaceae.^[1]

Picrophilus adalah genus sangat asidofilik dalam Euryarchaeota. Mikrob ini adalah organisme yang paling asidofilik saat ini dikenal,^[2] dengan kemampuan untuk tumbuh pada pH -0,06.^[3] Mereka asidofili obligat dan tidak dapat mempertahankan integritas membran mereka pada nilai pH lebih tinggi dari 4. Sementara filogenetis terkait untuk organisme lain dalam Thermoplasmata, tidak seperti Thermoplasma dan Ferroplasma, Picrophilus memiliki dinding sel S-layer.
