Georg Morris Cohen Brandes (4 Februari 1842 – 19 Februari 1927) adalah seorang kritikus dan sarjana Denmark yang memiliki pengaruh besar pada sastra Eropa Skandinavia dari 1870-an sampai abad ke-20. Ia dipandang sebagai seorang ahli teaori dibawah "Modern Breakthrough" dari budaya Skandinavia. Pada usia 30 tahun, Brandes merumuskan prinsip-prinsip dari realisme dan naturalisme yang baru, yang membawakan penulisan hiper-aestetik dan fantasi dalam sastra. Tujuan sastranya adalah membagikannya kepada beberapa penulis, salah satu diantaranya adalah penulis drama realis Norwegia Henrik Ibsen.

Biografi

Masa muda

Georg Brandes lahir di Copenhagen dalam sebuah keluarga kelas menengah Yahudi non-ortodoks, kakak dari Ernst Brandes dan Edvard Brandes. Ia menjadi seorang murid di Universitas Copenhagen pada 1859 dimana ia pertama kali mempelajari yurisprudensi. Namun, dari sini, pemahamannya turun ke filsafat dan aestetik. Pada 1862, ia memenangkan medali emas dari universitas tersebut untuk sebuah esay berjudul The Idea of Nemesis among the Ancients.^[1]
