Centropyge adalah genus ikan bersirip kipas dalam keluarga Pomacanthidae (Injel) yang ditemukan di Samudera Atlantik, Hindia dan Pasifik.[2] Panjang spesiesnya tidak melebihi 15 cm dan hidup dalam struktur haremik dengan satu jantan dominan dan beberapa betina.[2] Meski sulit untuk mengidentifikasi jenis kelaminnya, pada ikan betina seringkali lebih pendek dan siripnya lebih bulat. Seperti banyak ikan karang lainnya, spesiesnya merupakan ikan hermafrodit berurut yang memulai kehidupan dewasanya sebagai betina dan individu yang dominan dalam suatu kelompok dapat berubah menjadi jantan dalam beberapa hari. Pembalikan perubahan jenis kelamin ini dimungkinkan jika status sosial individu berubah, namun prosesnya membutuhkan lebih banyak waktu.[3]
