Elton John on Elton Johnin vuonna 1970 julkaistu toinen studioalbumi ja hänen varsinainen läpimurtoalbuminsa. Ensimmäinen single ”Border Song” ei menestynyt musiikkimarkkinoilla, mutta albumi sai suurimmalta osalta hyvät arvostelut ja myi suhteessa hyvin.[1] Sen tekemiseen oli budjetoitu 6 000 puntaa, mutta rahaa kului lopulta 10 000 puntaa.[2] Seuraava single oli ”Take Me to the Pilot”, jonka B-puoli ”Your Song” nousi kymmenen kärkeen sekä Britanniassa että Yhdysvalloissa.
