Music critic Jason Anderson, writing for Allmusic, wrote the album "Fans of the musician's stunning two-handed, alternate-tuned guitar innovations were a little disappointed by the relatively minimal Road to Return, with its accent on Hedges' newfound vocal stylings."[1]
