High Green is a settlement 6 miles from Barnsley and 9 miles from Sheffield. It is found to the north of Chapeltown and is served by buses; the nearest rail station is in Chapeltown. The suburb falls within the West Ecclesfield ward of the city Council. Wharncliffe Crags are nearby, as is Westwood Country Park.

High Green has 5 primary schools: 4 mainstream schools (Angram Bank Primary, High Green Primary, Greengate Lane Primary and St. Mary's Primary) and 1 non-maintained special school, Paces School formerly High Green Secondary, for both primary and secondary age children. High Green does not have a mainstream secondary school; pupils instead usually go to Ecclesfield School, approximately 2 miles away in the Ecclesfield suburb. Other secondary schools in the area are Stocksbridge or Notre Dame.

High Green is the home of Paces, a registered charity providing services for children and young people with cerebral palsy and their families, including a school.

Steve Peat , world champion Downhill Mountain Biking champion is from High Green and lives in nearby Wortley, Barnsley.

Alex Turner and most of the Arctic Monkeys pop group come from High Green. They were formed when the founding members were studying music at nearby Barnsley College.

Although High Green is in the Sheffield City Council area, this has only been the case since 1974. Like most of the area north of Hartley Brook, High Green was part of the Wortley Rural District, which was later divided between the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the City of Sheffield in April 1974. Many old High Greeners never saw themselves as Sheffielders.

Historically High Green was a small mining village. It was situated near the Westwood railway station, on the South Yorkshire Railway's Barnsley to Sheffield line.

High Green is encircled by countryside and quaint villages such as Howbrook, Bromley , Wortley and Tankersley all of which lies in the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough.
